In a Nutshell:
The Zerofootprint Youth Carbon Calculator is a free carbon footprint calculation tool aimed at improving the carbon literacy of children all over the world. Teachers use the calculator as part of an add-on to their prescribed curriculum when teaching science, environment, and even mathematics.
Where and When:
The Youth Calculator was first implemented in 2006 and has since been used by over 424,249 students worldwide and is accessible in six languages (English, French, Spanish, Arabic, Hebrew and Urdu). A sampling of countries includes Canada, United States, China, Sweden, Guatemala, Scotland, Taiwan, Germany, Ukraine, Australia, Columbia, Bolivia, Trinidad & Tobago and South Africa.
Challenges:
The Zerofootprint Youth Carbon Calculator is a valuable tool in the fight against climate change. Today’s youth are taking the future into their own hands in over 100 countries through the initiative that engages them in a worldwide network to measure, compare and change their behavior. As both a carbon calculator and social engagement platform, the Zerofootprint Youth Calculator connects young people to one another around the world to mitigate their collective carbon footprint.
Innovation:
The Youth Calculator includes basic questions for kids that measure their carbon footprint using local emission factors. Tips for reducing children’s carbon footprint and improving their general health are also displayed. At the end of the survey, the student’s carbon footprint is presented and compared to the world average footprint.
Concept:
The Youth Calculator was developed to engage young people in determining how they impact the world and hopefully, take action to change this impact. This tool was designed to enable students to calculate how much carbon dioxide their lifestyles produced through various aspects of daily life such as transportation, food, hygiene, waste disposal, use of energy etc.. They would then be able to see how many worlds it would take if everyone had the same lifestyle. By committing to lifestyle changes, the calculator estimates automatically how many tons of CO2 would be saved.
Description:
Making children around the world aware of their carbon footprint can affect change on a massive scale and provide ongoing support in the fight to reduce our carbon footprint. Thirty percent of the world’s population is under 18 years of age yet this group remains largely untapped in the global fight against climate change.
Impacts:
As of today, 424,249 young people have participated and the lifestyle change commitments made by the young people have meant that over 150,000 tons of CO2 were not emitted into the atmosphere. With a largely word-of-mouth promotion, the calculator has been dramatically successful, demonstration that young people want to be actively engaged in living sustainable lives.

At the end of the survey, the carbon footprint is presented and compared to the world average footprint. When available, the results can also be compared to students in other schools, countries, age ranges and genders.
The Youth Calculator includes questions such as how they get to school, vacations they take, and household issues like the type of food they eat and if they have a dryer to dry clothes
The questions are presented simply and when some are answered, a tip for reducing their carbon footprint or improving their general health is displayed. For example, when students are asked how many soft drinks are consumed per day, a goal to drink fewer soft drinks as well as the reason to reduce soft drink intake is displayed.
