Global Forum on Human Settlements (GFHS): Advancing Urban Innovations to Achieve SDG 11 and the New Urban Agenda

2018 Annual Session of Global Forum on Human Settlements (GFHS 2018) will be convened on 30-31 October 2018 at the United Nations Conference Center, Bangkok, Thailand, co-organized by the Global Forum on Human Settlements (GFHS) and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), themed as “Advancing Urban Innovations to Achieve SDG 11 and the New Urban Agenda”. GFHS 2018 will also serve as the observance of World Cities Day 2018.

GFHS 2018 is organized at a critical point in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the New Urban Agenda. The ambition of these global agendas will require the transformation of cities and the fostering of innovation to manage growth and create high-quality, resilient and sustainable urban development. Senior officials from the United Nations, high-level officials from Thailand and other national governments will join city mayors, practitioners and civil society to provide keynote addresses and participate in multi-stakeholder dialogues on how to leverage the potential of cities to realize the global objectives. More than 500 stakeholders from public sector, private sector and civil society will attend.

Sustainable Cities And Human Settlements Awards (SCAHSA) Ceremony will be hosted as one of the highlights of GFHS 2018, which will recognize urban innovations and recommending prominent progress and valuable experience towards a more sustainable world. The categories of SCAHSA include cities, buildings/communities, planning and design, tourism, transportation, entities and individuals including children. The deadline for applications and nominations for SCAHSA  is August 15, 2018.

GFHS 2018 is a global platform for high-level dialogues, and sharing of innovative approaches and solutions, strategies, technologies and successful local experiences. The forum seeks to enhance capacity, foster new partnerships and effective actions, and promote cooperation and green development. The winners of SCAHSA will also demonstrate their experiences and contribute to the theme of the forum.

The 2-day event will consist of an opening ceremony, keynote speech, mayors panel, parallel sessions, training sessions and networking. The Forum will address the key issue of localizing the Sustainable Development Goals and the New Urban Agenda through an application of a circular economy approach and the use of tools for financing sustainable urban infrastructure and applying innovative technologies for smart cities.

Sustainable Cities And Human Settlements Awards (SCAHSA) is a worldwide prize annually issued by Global Forum on Human Settlements (GFHS) and supported by renowned international organizations including UN Environment, and It is focused on promoting the mission of GFHS and enhancing the implementation of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) , notably goal 11. The Awards has been successfully held for 12 times and the awardees come from different parts of the world. It has created high-level interactive platforms for insiders to share and spread knowledge and experience, exerting significant demonstrative effects and providing a higher profile to the realization of MDGs and SDGs.

Observance of “Word Cities Day 2015” & GFHS 2015, UN Headquarters, New York

The Global Forum on Human Settlements (GFHS) is a 501(c) (3) not-for-profit organization, legally chartered in the State of New York, USA. GFHS is committed to sustainable cities and human settlements for all. GFHS has been granted the Special Consultative Status with ECOSOC, and is an Associate Partner of World Urban Campaign by UN-Habitat. It has become a cooperative partner with the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA), United Nations Environment Programme(UN Environment), and United Nations Human Settlements Programme(UN-Habitat).

As of 2017, the annual session of Global Forum on Human Settlements has been successfully held in China, the United States, Brazil, Germany, Columbia and Ecuador for consecutive 12 times. More than 13,000 representatives from all circles of society attended the forum.
